Our OT Driving AssessmentProcess

At Ganly Allied Health, our Occupational Therapists provide comprehensive driving assessments to determine whether a person can drive safely and independently following an injury, illness, disability or change in physical or cognitive function.

The process typically begins with an initial consultation to understand the person’s medical and driving history, current abilities, concerns and goals. The OT assesses relevant physical, visual, cognitive, perceptual and functional skills that may impact driving performance.

Where required, a practical on-road assessment is completed in conjunction with an appropriately qualified driving instructor. This provides an opportunity to assess the person’s ability to safely manage the vehicle, respond to traffic situations, follow road rules and demonstrate appropriate decision-making in real-world driving environments.

For people with physical disabilities, we may also consider whether vehicle modifications or adaptive driving equipment could support safe and independent driving. This may include hand controls, steering aids, accelerator modifications, wheelchair access solutions or other specialised equipment.

Following the assessment, the OT provides recommendations and a detailed report outlining the person’s driving capacity, any identified risks, required vehicle modifications, rehabilitation needs or further assessment requirements.

Our goal is to provide a thorough, objective and supportive assessment that promotes safe driving while maximising independence and community participation.
